The Blood Orange is a recently hybridized orange, cultivated in the 18th century in China and the southern Mediterranean. The orange grows on a middle-sized evergreen tree. There are streaks of red in the blood orange fruit, and the juice often has a reddish tinge. Its red pigment, anthocyanin, is an antioxidant that is rare in the rest of the citrus family.
