Bath Bombs

Make your own fizzy bath bombs! Making them yourself costs a fraction of what you pay in stores. A basic formula creates the fizz and then you can get creative with coloring, scent and additional ingredients.

This is the basic formula:
- 2 parts Baking Soda (Bicarbonate of Soda)
- 1 part Citric Acid
- some liquid to bind the two other ingredients

Below is a sample recipe to get you going!

Ingredients

Yield: 4 x 2.5" round bath bombs:

1 cup Baking Soda (290 gm)
1/2 cup Citric Acid (124 gm)
1/2 cup Cornstarch (80 gm)
1/4 cup Dead Sea Salt (80 gm)
2 tbsp of Sweet Almond Oil

Instructions

It is always advised to pre-measure your ingredients for accuracy and the ability to concentrate on the process and not having to stop at a critical moment to get something you need.

You will need the following equipment:

A big bowl for mixing
Sifter or whisk for combining dry ingredients
Rubber gloves
Witch hazel in a bottle with mister
Scale if recipe is in weights
Molds

Safety

Making bath bombs is relatively safe. If you wish a mask could be worn when working with the dry goods as particles can become airborne.

Step 1

Sift all your dry ingredients together in a big bowl to disperse any lumps.

The salt may be too chunky to sift, so use a whisk to gently stir in the salt to the rest of the powder.

Step 2

Melt any solid butter you may be using.

Slowly drizzle some of the liquid into the dry mixture while continuously moving the dry goods around with your hand (a rubber glove is recommended). Add more liquid at intervals mixing well in between each addition.

With this amount of dry goods I would add about 2 tbsp of liquid (any combination of oils, melted cocoa or shea butter and even some water or witch hazel).

Step 3

Once the mixture is "formable", press into the two halves of your Bath Bomb mold. Then press the two halves together being careful not to twist them together.

Step 4

If using a two piece mold, you can leave in mold to let it dry out a bit, or if you feel confident in your texture, remove from mold and rest on parchment paper on a tray.

Some makers like to put the bombs in a warm oven to dry out the bombs.

Let sit for a few minutes and then unmold. Let them air dry overnight. If the ball sticks to the mold and comes apart you may be able to rescue it by adding some more dry ingredients to the mix.
