I've been calling around for liability insurance, and it's been $1000.00 per year.
I'm told by the insurance company that $1000 is the lowest premium for this type of insurance.
Just a note - I asked for this as a a rider on my home insurance, and when I told them I have a small soap making business, they're now going to cancel my tenant insurance due to the risk, unless I now buy this new policy... (which I'm not going to do)
My wife was not impressed..!
So if you go asking around, my recommendation is to say "I have this friend who makes candles/soap..."

Good luck..!

Hi.
I asked for a quote from N and they said $4000.00. That is way too high for a home business. 4 years ago they quoted $500.00. What's up with that? Some crafters are lucky to make even that much in a year. I find it crazy when the U.S has cheaper rates such as the Soapmakers guild.

Since this is not a candle supplier we are discussing and asking about, it would be allowed to post the info on this insurance company...celicagtca; why don't you just post the name and info of this insurance company, so we all don't have to ask you for it over and over and over again. Thanks.

I make cp soaps, hand lotions and other body care products.
I have heard but not sure of this but Co-Operators might do insurance. Not sure yet as I have not tried them. Does anybody else know? I can't believe that the U.S would have such good prices and in Canada it is hard to even find companies. Hmmmm

I believe that the insurance company that the soap guild uses will insure those in Canada, just not through the guild. You could try contacting them directly and see.
Stratus Insurance at beauty@stratusins.com.

I had my house insurance cancelled by State Farm because I made soap and had "wild" animals... emu and llamas $1000. is cheap compared to quotes I've had.
My email is mmllamaladyaol.com if you could send me the info.

I belong to the Handcrafted Soapmakers Guild.
They are located in the US. We can join for abou $80.00 US. The members only part of the website is very informative. I would highly recommend joining.

Hello All; I've been reading your submissions and I have a silly question. What does this insurance you are speaking of cover you for? Is it law to have it or just to protect yourself in case?
Thanx

The soap guilds insurance company is hoping to have coverage for Canadians in place sometime this year.
My broker called to ask the questions. I have separate insurance it is about $750 - $1000.00 per year. The insurance covers me against lawsuits and business loss. If you are selling your product you should have insurance. If someone has a reaction to something that you have sold them you need to be covered. I know bath and body care is not covered under your home based business rider on your home insurance.

Maybe you can share the Info with us I Just got an insurance for everything for 650 a year it's a little stiff But at list I feel safe

Hi Christina,
I was going to look into just ordinary business insurance as well in hopes it would be cheaper and just as comprehensive...does yours include liability? What is it you sell? Can you give me the company info? Much appreciated! Thanks!

Shan

My understanding is Business insurance and Liability Insurance is two very different things. I have to have both for my bath and body business. My business insurance covers my premises and damages to my business products. But my liability covers me against lawsuits from damages that might happen if someone is injured by a product that I have made.

Alright so my since my business is run out of my home my house insurance covers and fire, flooding etc. My business insurance covers theft and against lawsuits in case a customer slips and falls etc. If you run a small business from your home there are many loop holes and you just need to find them. Your home insurance should cover a majority of things. Hope this helps.

Oh yeah I thought I would also mention that I am getting a substantial price break because my husband and I have everything insured with the same insurance company. I think I was looking at $50+ without the breaks.

Christina! your insurance might cover all of the above
But does not cover B&B or Candles I know because I had the same and had to canceled, I use to pay only $259 for the year, now it's $675 a year, and Shan it is Nacora insurance

Thanks Marybess.

Christina, it does sound like you should have extra insurance in terms of liability...if you're making candles and someone burns their home down using it (despite warning labels) technically they could sue you. Or if you make soap and someone had a severe reaction the result could be the same. Now someone may never actually do that but still...just incase.

So I just got off the phone with my insurance company and would like to share some information with everyone. So my insurance policy does provide me with a million dollar liability coverage. And in regards to Shan's comment about the warning labels, it would be quite hard for someone to prove my business negligent if they failed to follow the proper instructions. Either way I am covered in regards to every aspect whether it be under my house or business insurance. What everyone needs to remember is that insurance companies just want you money 9 times out of 10 so I urge everyone to look around and get yourself the best deal.

In regards to Marybess' comment my insurance company does know that I make candles out of the home and it even states that in my insurance policy so I am sorry to hear that you had to cancel yours.

Hi Everyone,
I just sent an E-mail to The Soapers Guild in the U.S. They replied this...If you become a member...Insurance is now in B.C, Canada and they are still in the process of adding (their agent)in the future more Canadian provinces. They did not sell how much the membership is with the insurance. Without insurance it is $80.00. I will be keeping my eye on this as they do have alot with their insurance for coverage.
Hope this helps,

I am the International Chair for the Soap Guild. Membership with insurance is around the $500.00 US mark.
I am not sure of the exact figure. When I was at conference this year it was stated that the rest of Canada should have insurance with the Guild by summers end. I figure that means years end.
Contact me for more info if you like.

You may want to contact Kim Libenstein at the Canfinse Group. 888=667-9177. I think he used to be with Nacora. Anyway on the info he sent the premium for a year is $684 and it can be pro-rated. It is a Crafts,Artisans and Jewellers Insurance Program. I sold my candle making supplies last year (was too busy with other stuff) but still like to read what is going on. You can also contact him at kim.libenstein@canfinse.com and they have a website at www.canfinse.com The application is due July 31, but it looks like you can sign up quarterly, it shows the next due date as Oct 31. Anyway, thought this might be of interest to some of you.

Kim is my contact person as well.

Their policy is quite extensive, likely covers more than I need as a soapmaker, but thus far it's about the only place who has such an Insurance.

Until the Soapmakers Guild arrives in Canada, we're pretty much limited in our choices.
